My journey and why it matters:

I was once told that my skin tone is unsuitable for color tattoos. This was way before I started tattooing so I took the artist’s word since I didn’t know better. It created a barrier in my mind that I shouldn’t ever get color tattoos. Ever since I became a tattoo artist, I realized that although it is true that certain colors won’t show up as well on certain skin tones, there are ways around it and it’s up to us, the tattoo artist, to have the expertise to determine that. Since I’ve had this experience, I am determined to make sure my client can feel comfortable getting color pieces but also to be honest in recommending what will heal best (which is what matters the most at the end of the day).

My arm under natural lighting for reference ^

I would consider my skin type medium with yellow undertones (since I’m Asian).

Since then, I got these color pieces to prove I can

@maiyashu.pokes

@fairypulp

@lyyons.ink

They all healed beautifully and the colors stayed very well.

The unicorn piece done by @lyyons.ink contains a lot of yellow for the stars. Pastel yellow wouldn’t have showed up on my skin tone so instead, they used a darker ochre color but it still reads as yellow because of the context.

Examples ⟡

For me and my Asian peeps, blue tends to heal into a more teal color due to our natural undertones but that doesn’t mean we can’t get any blue color pieces!!

Blue Tattoo I did on my friend @mindytattoo_art (a fellow Asian girlie)

Healed (it didn’t heal as green because we added purple into the blue):

If you are unsure whether or not color shows up well on your skin tone, I’m always happy to provide a color test and see how it heals (I will design it in a cute way)

Darker Skin Tones and How it Heals

⟡ Depending on the color, it might appear slightly duller

⟡ There are slightly more limitations but also ways to work around it

Freshly done tattoo:

As you can see, the lighter color almost look like a sticker, opaque on top of the skin.

Healed:

When it heals, it becomes more apart of your skin.

Examples of different colors on a range of melanated skin:

⟡ Large amounts of white is discouraged as it tends to heal into a yellowish hue

⟡ High contrast is important to make all the different parts distinguishable
